Pretty much everything,” she says. “We’ve been noticing it on things that you wouldn’t quite expect it on. Very formal pieces are adding leather detail just to give it a little bit of edge. It’s kind of neat.”
As for colours, red is all the rage. “Everything from red winter jackets to red jeans to knits,” McDonough says. “They’re a nice deep red, too.” Unexpected print combinations paisley mashed up with florals; horizontals against verticals; polka dots met with stripes also make a splash. “It seemed the traditional rules of matching were abandoned a little bit.”Jewelry and handbags don’t follow seasons quite as closely as clothing, buyers say, so shoppers will likely see many of the same trends we’ve seen before.
Rings are still big, necklaces are still long, and bags are still designed to be worn crossbody.
“I always have crossbodies in the store because they just always sell really fast,” says Sabrina Safranka, coowner of Miss Boss on 124th Street.
What’s new, though, is fur, which Safranka sees in just about every bag collection she carries. “I think you’re going to see a lot of fur, for sure,” she says, noting that the fluffy stuff (faux, usually) features prominently in purses by Big Buddha , Christopher Kon and Montreal’s Sas .
